    Minimisation of Air Pollutants

Hamburg Airport is constantly working to minimise the emission of air pollutants at the Airport. This mainly concerns vehicles on the apron and the auxiliary power units of the aircraft.

New acquisitions of operational vehicles should mainly be powered by natural or liquid gas.

Compared with petrol-powered vehicles, those powered by natural gas emit …

… up to 25% less carbon dioxide (CO2)
… up to 75% less carbon monoxide (CO)
… up to 60% less reactive perfluorinated hydrocarbons (HC)

Compared with petrol-powered vehicles, those powered by liquid gas emit …

… up to 15% less carbon dioxide (CO2)
… up to 80% less carbon monoxide (CO)
… up to 60% less reactive perfluorinated hydrocarbons (HC)

    Ground Power Units

Ground power units, which generated the power for aircraft on the ground, are powered by Diesel. In order to minimise the air pollution for employees and neighbours, a particle filter has already been installed. This filter first filters soot and subsequently burns this without any residue. In the course of the year, an additional five GPUs will be acquired, which all will be equipped with filters. In the following two years, another ten will follow.
